Old Business: Class workshop: (March)
Discussion of Sherry Goshon's class in March, the 23rd and 24th at the Hartesty Library. Payment to Pam by check or cash of $75.00 for the class. Make out checks to Tulsa Dolling Dames. The kit fee for each person taking the class is $5.00 & will be paid by TDD. Laura will we sending out Sherry's supply list, homework, and body pattern after you have paid for the class. There will be a face mold and some messy work so bring an apron to protect your clothes.
Tulsa Quilt Show at the Fair grounds. (June)
There will be dolls from the Hoffman Trunk there, our pin dolls to sell, and display dolls. We will have two tables and as usual you can volunteer to sit in the booth, set up and tear down. If you would like to volunteer, talk to Jayne or Laura. Dates are June 8th and 9th. We will all add to our pin doll collection by making one pin doll to sell. They were very popular and sold out quickly last time.
Hoffman Challenge due in July
Frankly the Hoffman challenge fabric will be a challenge for a doll. It is time to get your thinking caps on for this challenge. You can find the fabric at The Cotton Patch Woodland Hills.
Storybook Challenge Doll August 1st
The dolls will be displayed at the Hardesty Library with the book about the doll. Bring to Laura at the Hardesty on or before August 1. Use your own imagination but at least make it recognizable as the character in the book.
Leta Benedict will be our teacher for Oct.!
Charity dolls project is getting very little attention. Should we drop doing them?
New Business:
Door prize by Daria and won by Barbara D. The door prize was a treasurer trove of fabric and a cute pin.
Our next door prize will be brought by Barbara Kanter. The next program is by Shirley. (maybe)
Jayne brought the TDD library today and we appreciate her doing that.
We had a really wonderful program today with Laura on Research and Dollmaking. It was a powerpoint discuss how she goes about getting inspiration for her dolls. Some of the places she talked about were online searches on Wikipedia, Kyato costume Institute (digital archives), Costume page.org, Colonial Williamsburg and much more. She would be happy to send you the power point program if you e-mail her.
We were happy to see all of you today. If you were unable to come we hope you will be back next time. Invite someone to come to doll club. We are a fun group and love dolls & friends.

The holidays are behind us and it's a brand new year! We held our first meeting on a nice, sunny day. It must have been a busy December as not many "Show & Tell" dolls came this month.

Doreen brought her Nutcracker, fresh from the library display. Not everyone had a chance to go by the library so it was nice to see some of the dolls from the mini-exhibit.

Connie brought her library display also. She's a Barbara Schoenoff pattern,"Blooms" done in a winter motif.

Shirley made this month's door prize, a sweet little Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. She was won by our visitor, Lindsey! Speaking of Alice in Wonderland ~ we decided our challenge doll this year will be a storybook character. We plan to have them ready by August 1 to put in the summer library display, along with the book the character is from. Sounds like fun!

We have something else to look forward to.... in March, Sherry Goshon will be here for a 2-day workshop. She sent us some pictures of the doll we'll be making.

She's a mixed media doll with a frame skirt and face mold.

2012 is off to a great start!

December Doll Club

We had our annual holiday luncheon at Jean's Magical Doll House. It was a great time of talking, eating, exchanging gifts, and of course, some Show & Tell!

We saw some finished Steampunk dolls, a beautiful bronze/coppery Raven doll, and some Prims.

The gift exchange is usually a doll or doll-related item. We put them on the Show & Tell table for pictures. Our members make such wondrous delights!

We had a lovely time! Thank you, Jean, for opening your home to the club! See you all in January!

Just want to show you a few more goodies from the November meeting!

Daria made this beautiful wall hanging from pieces of wool.

And she's been designing & experimenting making baby boots - not booties. Boots!

Jean made the door prize this month - always a coveted item and it was won by Barbara K.

Mary Ann brought this delightful mixed media opera singer. She even has a microphone (not shown).

Pam had the program this month and did a great job demonstrating how to make wings. Many of the group had learned this technique together a few years ago but enjoyed the refresher; and the newbies loved it!

She brought some winged creatures to show how the finished results can look.

Below are the contributions the club members made to an outreach for the women of Afghanistan. A ministry we know is assembling small sewing kits to give them to enable them to use their fine needlework skills to earn income.

Our Dolling Dames are always generous with their time, knowledge and of course, needles & thread!

Tulsa Dolling Dames Minutes, Nov. 2, 2011

We met as usual at the B Sew Inn and had our usual fantastic meeting with dolling friends. It's always a highlight to see everyone and hear what has been going with each person, since our last meeting.
It was a cool windy day as fall has arrived. The temperature is 38 degrees this morning.

Financial Report Treasurer: Pam reported a $1204.00 balance as of 11/1/2011.

What a wonderful class we had with Barbara Schoenoff and the Steampunk doll. Barbara was so much fun and kept it lively. The doll was a challenge and different and new techniques were learned. The first doll is always a learning project. I aways learn more about what not to do next time when I make a doll.

Old Business: Charity Dolls, Hardesty library display, Christmas party, :

Laura discussed charity dolls. It would be excellent if all of us would make at least one to give to Laura or Barbara before the end of the year.

Christmas display for the Hardesty Library will be due Dec. 1st. Take your doll or dolls to Laura at the library and she will be setting up around noon. Christmas theme dolls is the challenge but any dolls are ok.

The Christmas party will be at Jean's, Dec 10th, Sat., at noon. A sign up list was passed around for fingerfood or whatever you want to bring. We will have an exchange of gifts so if you want to participate bring a doll related gift in a anonymous paper bag. If you have finished your steampunk doll or any doll bring it with you to show and tell. If you need directions to Jean's house let Jean know.

New Business:

Sherry Goshon will be teaching in March. Dates are not set yet but probably around the 23rd & 24th. It has not been decided if we need a 3rd half day on Sunday.

Leta will be coming next Oct. Depending on her schedule may be 19th and 20th. She will be teaching the Guardian Doll probably.

Connie requested sewing material for a project with her church. See her e-mail.

Show and Tell:
Connie will be posting on the Tulsa Dolling Dames blog soon. There were several finished Steampunk dolls. It's always fun to see each person's interpretation of a doll.

The program:
Pam gave a wonderful program on free machine stitching. She got her inspiration from Clothdolls for Textile artists by Ray Slater. Pam made a gorgeous doll using this technique. Thanks Pam, wonderful class.

We will not be meeting in December at B Sew Inn. We will have our party Dec. 10th at Jean's house in Sand Springs. Hope to see you there!

Fall Workshop with Barbara Schoenoff

We had a really fun workshop in October with Barbara Schoenoff teaching us her new Steampunk doll, Anneal. Workshop preparation is as much fun as making the doll. There's the choosing of fabric...

and embellishments (which in this case would be gears, watch pieces, and assorted industrial tools our Steampunk Babe might need to do her job.)

and the various tools a doll maker needs.

Then comes the cutting, sewing and stuffing...

and our lady begins to take shape.

Barbara patiently walked us through the face sculpting and painting and beautiful faces were the result.

We learned a new method of giving the doll a shapely torso.

And then the dressing began!

It's so fun to see all the unique interpretations of one design!

Jack made a brilliant discovery at the local HbyLby...shoes in the Christmas decorations department that fit like a Cinderella slipper!

Jack's doll is packin' some serious hardware. All custom designed and handmade of course.

This reminded us of the scene in The Wizard of Oz where the house fell on the wicked witch, exposing only her feet, except in this case it looked like a sewing machine fell on our lady. But no worries, soon you will see her standing in all her Steampunk glory!

At our November club meeting, some finished dolls were brought for Show & Tell. You'll see them in the next post!

We met some nice people and had some interesting converstions about Dolls and Dollmaking at the fair. It was a pleasant way to spend some time promoting Dollmaking and the TDD. Here are some pictures.

Jean's sign looked great and we gave out some fliers.

Doreen and Jack had their pictures taken several times by visitors!

Surprisingly, quite a few asked the Dolls names,

even more took pictures.

Treasurer's report: $1657. Laurie turned over treasurer position to Pam Hurd.

Old business:
Tulsa State Fair: the artist village was in the Central Park Hall. This was the first year and some of our members volunteered and were there to demonstrate how to make cloth art dolls on the first week end.
Pick up time for entry dolls will be on Monday Oct. 10th, 7:30 am to 1:00 pm.
Art on Main in Jenks is this Saturday. Set up is at 9am and it opens at 10 am until 6pm. If you have something to sell or want to sit bring a chair, something to drink and or eat. This will be a fund raiser for the TDD also. We will sell our pins. The club is paying $25.00 for the booth. If you would like you can donate a portion of your sales also. Hope the rain will hold off for those hours.

Leta Benedict's class was called off due to Leta's family problems at this time. Hoping to reschedule next year possibly in Oct.

Shari Goshon will be teaching March 23rd to 24th 2012.

The Hardesty Library display will be Dec. 1st with a holiday theme. Shari suggested we put the pattern beside the dolls we have made for the Library display and I will bring designer cloth doll books like Patty Culea.....Take the dolls on the 1st of Dec. to Laurie and she will put them in the cases.

We voted to have the Holiday Christmas party at Jean's this year, December 10th, Saturday at noon.
More on this later.

Now for some really good news. Even though Leta won't be coming we have arranged for Barbara Schoenoff to come Oct. 21-22 for a workshop. (the week after when Leta was coming) She has 15 new patterns. She is a fantastic doll designer and a wonderful teacher. She will be teaching Steampunk doll she has recently designed. Barbara will be contacting her and getting the patterns e-mailed or at least the supply list and what we need to get started.

Please contact Pam who is our new treasurer, Barbara, or Laurie if you want your money back from Leta's class, or you can roll it over to Barbara's class or hold it for a future class. The cost of Barbara's class is the same as Leta's was, $60.

Barbara gave us a program on pin dolls and had many suggestions about where we could find patterns. She showed several of her pin dolls and all this was to encourage us to come up with ideas for pin doll to sell at the quilt show next year as a fund raiser. One idea was for each of us to make a few and have a selection of different pin dolls this year. It would give us more time if we started thinking about it now.

We missed those who could not be with us this time and hope to see you at the next meeting.

My Studio reflects my interests, which are all over the place. Currently, my computer room and sewing room are combined, which is good as most of the work on my dolls requires programming the sewing machine. The pictures below show a somewhat organized room, which is not the norm. Behind the doors at the end of the room hide all the material and other sewing supplies, which sneak out when I am making something.

There is also my shop which is where I make the settings for my dolls, among other things. The pictures below show the workspace, but there are doors that lead to the storage areas where all the "junk" is hiding that goes along with my woodworking endevors.

ps - Mr Spitz, the cat, often visits my shop to snoop around. This is my first online post!

Treasurer's report: Not available

Old business:
Tulsa State Fair: The dates for the fair are, Sept 29th until Oct 9th. There has been an extention to registering online until midnight on Sept 9th.
Also, a letter will be sent to you confirming your registration. They are mailing them on Monday. Bring this confirmation with you when you bring in your dolls.
Take your dolls to Central Park Hall, (same building as last year).
Also we will have a booth at the fair for the first time. Dates & times for our booth at Central Park Hall during the fair for the people who volunteered to sit and show how we make our dolls are Oct. 1st 10-2pm and Sun, Oct 2nd 12-4pm and Frid. Oct 7th 2-8pm. Talk to Laurie if you want to volunteer for a time yourself.

Art on Main, Jenks:
Oct 8th, Sat. 10-6pm This is where we will sell our pin dolls for a fund raiser for the club. You can talk to Laurie or Jayne if you want to sit and if you want to sell some of your own work.

Charity Dolls:
We still need people to make charity dolls. Recently Barbara took some to a shelter. This is a very good thing.

Leta Benedict's class is Oct 14th and 15th at 9am. The doll is stunning and the fee is $60.00 with a $35.00 kit fee. The pattern and supply list will be sent to Jean soon, see her recent e-mail... If you are mailing a check make it out to Tulsa Dolling Dames. You have until the next meeting to pay. (Oct. 5) Jean is ordering 20 gourds for the class which will need to be cleaned and cut. Jack is going to help out with the cutting. Jack is going to make some bases also so discuss this with him if you want one.

NEW BUSINESS:
Voting for 2012 teachers.
We discussed 3 teachers for a 2 day workshop next year, one in March and one in Oct. Sherry Goshon, Leslie Molen and Nancy Gawron. Sherry was voted to do our workshop in March.
Laurie sent emails for each teachers site so you could decide who you would like to have come. We have yet to decide on October's teacher so if you would like to choose who you want to teach please visit their sites again and we will vote next meeting who we want for Oct.

Voted for Pam to be our Treasurer:
Barbara has had some health problems and has resigned as treasurer. Take it a bit easier Barbara. We know you put a lot into the club as it is.

Jayne brought the library today. Daria brought give aways.

Door Prize was made by Doreen and won by Carlyn. It was a darling little doll. Carlyn says she is a "first time winner"!

Carlyn gave a wonderful program on making a paper clay mask over a styroform ball. It was quite a interesting way of doing a face and she made it pretty fast. Thanks Carlyn you did a great job.

December we will have a holiday display at the Hardesty Library.

Doreen recently attended the first ADAA (All Dolls Are Art) conference in Austin. She enjoyed it & brought a few friends back with her.

Old Business:

State Fair: entry forms must be postmarked by Aug. 26th if mailed. There is a form on the Tulsa State Fair site (www.tulsastatefair.com). The State Fair starts Sept 29th to Oct. 9th. We need our dollmakers to enter. The cost is $4.00 per doll to enter...Go to Tulsa State Fair Handbook for details. Go to competitive exhibits, Adult, Hand Arts to finf the doll information. Please consider entering since we need to represent our dolls to the public and entries the past two years have dwindled.

Art on Main: Jayne is still waiting to see if we have been accepted for a booth here. Oct 8th Let Jayne or Laurie know if you want to sell some of your creations.

Leta Benedict is teaching a doll on Oct. 14th, & 15th. We voted to only have her teach the two days.
We still don't know what doll she will teach or what the cost will be. There is a lot of interest from outside the doll club of people interested in taking the class so Leta is a very popular doll artist designer.
Her patterns are very detailed. Laurie will send out an e-mail and have each of us RSVP whether we are taking the class.

Teachers for next year were discussed. Sherry Goshon, Leslie Molen and Nancy Gawron. Sherry Goshon's cost would be less because a doll club in Ark. would like to have her come and teach as well and the travel cost would be shared by both clubs. There was a lot of interest in Sherry coming first. These would be teachers for 2012.

Doreen gave a glowing report on ADAA (All dolls are Art) the conference in Austin. Next year it is July 26-29th. She took a class with Lisa Renner and Cindi Mahlstadt.

Connie suggested having a class taught by Jayne and Laurie making a paper mache stump doll. She has a place in mind where it can be done since it's a messy project and a sink is needed. 6-7 people were interested in doing this one evening. all you need is a doll body to work on.

The door prize was made by Laurie and was a beautiful red white and blue candlestick doll. Barbara D. won!

We worked on the pin dolls after the meeting which we will be selling at Art On Main if we get a booth. It was fun.

Charity Dolls. Any pattern suitable. There is a Dolly Hugs and Bear Hugs pattern on Antonette Cely Dollmaking for Dolls (www.nonidolls.com). This is the bear pattern, Barbara showed us today. This is an ongoing project and the charity doll can be given to Laura or Barbara K.

Hoffman challenge is due July 15th.

Tulsa State Fair entry forms must be postmarked by Aug. 26th if mailed. There is a form on the Tulsa State fair site (www.tulsastatefair.com). The entry form site can be filled out and each doll needs to be listed. See the Tulsa State Fair Handbook for details. Go to Competitive exhibits, adult, hand arts to find the Doll information. Laura encouraged participation because we haven't had as many dolls the last few years. I think the public really enjoys seeing the dolls we make. The State Fair is Sept. 29th to Oct. 9th. Any doll that hasn't been seen before at the fair is ok.

Art on Main Oct 8th. Here is where we can sell our work and sell our pins to raise funds for the TDD.
If you want to sell, let Jayne or Barbara know. They have reserved a covered 10' x 10' booth & have tables. Jayne is waiting for a final approval of our booth by Art on Main.
Sherrill and Shirley donated some of their own pin dolls for the TDD money maker.

Leta Benedict is teaching Oct. 14, 15th and possibly 1/2 day on the 16th. Jean is waiting to hear back from Leta if we need the 1/2 day, if she provides a kit, and what doll we will make. We need this information by Aug. meeting so we can find out what the class will cost.

New Business
Discussed what our goals might be for 2012. We discussed retreats, CD patterns we might do together as a group, challenges and teachers we are interested in.
Laura will get information and present something on Nancy Gawron, Sherry Goshon, & Leslie Molen next meeting. After seeing this information in Aug. hopefully we can decide and get two teachers nailed down for Sept and they & we can plan ahead.

It was decided that for the library display Dec. 1st to Dec. 31 we would do a holiday scene with elves, Santa's, toys, sleighs and whatever is Christmas.

The door prize was won by Barbara D. and was made by Jayne. It was an excellent prize, fabric, doll, and pattern.

We worked on the doll pins after the meeting and it was slow going but got a few things done on them.
Good time for chatting with each other.

The CIFI girls, Doreen, Laura, & Jayne really enjoyed their trip to Albuquerque. Their dolls projects are going to be on the TDD Site.

ADAA (All Dolls Are Art) in Austin July 28-31, is going to be attended by some and also NIADA in Aug.

If you want to help with making the pins some will be working at Jean's this Sat.

Greetings Everyone! It's a few days until our next meeting and we'll have some Show & Tell to, well, show and tell. So until then we thought it would be fun to see another Dolling Dame creative room! Welcome to Doreen's. This lady is MUCHO Talented! You already know she makes wonderful dolls, whimsical and beautiful. But did you know about her exquisite embroidery? The HAND kind, no fancy machine here!Her creative room is a feast for the eyes. Dolls, dolls, dolls, and all manner of incredible embroidered work.The framed pictures look like paintings. Thousands of tiny stitches coming together in a symphony of thread to create a precious work of art.

Doreen thought her room was too "messy" to be photographed (!) Pish-posh! We all know there is no such thing as messy when it comes to our creative space.Organized closets. Labled plastic bins. Labeled magazine holders. Hmmm. Not exactly a wreck, would you say?Thank you, Doreen, for allowing us to enjoy your wonderful studio!!

Attended todays meeting: Jack, Daria, Jean, Mary Ann, Shari, Carlyn, Doreen,

Financial Report by Laurie, shows a net worth of $971.00. Our bank account is now in the club's name, Tulsa Dolling Dames. The other account is now closed.

Old Business:
Jayne has reserved a 10 x 10 booth for Art on Main, Oct. 8th. Laurie has a canopy. There is a $25.00 fee for the booth and the club will reimburse Jayne. Here is where we will be selling our pins we will make..Jayne and Barbara will be selling their dolls for sure so contact them if you want to particate in selling for more information.

We will work on the pin dolls July and August during our monthly meetings, instead of having programs. If you have thin wire, beads, needle nose plyers and findings bring them to add to the doll pins.

Leta Benedict will be teaching Oct 14, 15th & possibly the 16th for half day at the Hadesty Library, Maple room. Time starting on Friday and Sat will be 9am-5pm. It will be determined if we will need Sunday after Jean has talked to Leta. Leta will be ask for 3 pictures of dolls she could teach us & if there will be a kit. Jayne and Barbara like all her dolls and would even take the class they just had with her over again!

Jack reminded us of the charity dolls and he received more today from Doreen and Shirley.

Hoffman challenge is due July 15th. A few of us are working on the Hoffman doll and some of the pictures are starting to appear on Deanna Hogan's site.

This site is fun to watch as it starts to fill with some of the challenge dolls.
If anyone wants to do the Hoffman challenge it is impossible to find the fabric here in Tulsa. The fabric stores are just not carrying it....you need only a small piece on your doll so I have a bit of it left if you need some. The Tulsa Dolling Dames have some of the best dolls out there and many of our girls have won in the past. The prize for entering is usually just some Hoffman fabric but it is very well run and having your doll travel for a year is just so much fun as well as being a part of it.

New Business:

Barbara and Jayne discussed AFIC (Artistic Fiber in Cloth) in Columbus, Ohio. They highly recommend this conferance so maybe more of us could attend next year.
Barbara recommends Leslie Molen as the next teacher. She was impressed with her as a teacher and person. Leslie is in charge of NIADA this year in Denver.

We nominated and elected new officers for the coming 2 years:

What a wonderful meeting we had this month!First we're going to show you a treasure trove of fun that Barbara & Jayne brought back from AFIC. It's great to see other's work & learn from them. For example, note how attitude is conveyed thru this doll's posture.
Lots of layering in trims. Note how the beading is clustered near the neckline, then sprinkles down.

Appreciate a vintage doll.

The background is a piece of embroidered cloth Barbara bought because it's so lovely. You can relate, right?!

It's spring! Beauty, color, sweet sights & sounds are popping up everywhere!

We didn't expect a band to come play for us this month but they did. What a surprise!

Doreen sure outdid herself with this piece. Her little band of forest folk are sitting on a real log (treated by drying in the oven).

It's not "Snow White & 7 Dwarves" but maybe the Gnome Band has "Sweeping Beauty" to clean up after them. Jean made "Sweeping Beauty" from a Cindee Moyer pattern.Jean's doll faces are always so sweet & serene looking.

Shirley has experimented with another kind of doll making; paper dolls in cloth dress & lots of embellishments. This is a Barbara Willis pattern. Remember making paper dolls?

MaryAnn brought some adorable felt animals and this colorful bird. At next month's meeting she's going to demonstrate felting.As a club, one of our goals this year is to make comfort dolls & bears for children in stressful situations.
We had a small attendance this month but lots of fun, talking & sharing, as always. See you next month!

Well, it was very good to get our doll parade back on track after missing last month's get together due to the weather!

And what a festive way to begin our meeting - with a parade of elephants. Shirley made up several of these from scraps. We think they would be perfect for a charity outreach. They are so cheery! Joyce brought some felted friends for Show & Tell. Our meetings are always quite lively - maybe to observers, it looks like a zoo!
But we're actually quite orderly. We just like to have fun!Perhaps this last snowy month had everyone thinking "fur". Carlyn made these precious critters. If the circus is coming to town, there will be clowns! Laura brought this gift she received from Barbara. What's a parade without spectators? Of course there were dolls! And you'll see more of those next post. Check back soon...

Where Dames Create: Connie's Studio

One of our TDD member's studio was featured in Studios magazine. We were excited to see one of our own in national print and it was fun to see how she and other artists make a small space work for their creative endeavors. So we thought it would be fun (for us and you, too!) to see where the Dolling Dames create. Connie volunteered to go first, so welcome to the first edition of Where Dames Create!
This is a multi-interest hobby room. The re-purposed bakers rack was painted white and holds bins of scrapbooking/card-making supplies. A former spicerack was also painted white & now holds an assortment of glitter & embossing powders. A computer with two monitors is used for a zillion things: digitizing embroidery patterns, editing pictures, watching The Young & Restless, and of course, Blogging! The room is painted a cheerful yellow with white trim. Two 4' folding tables can be stored when not in use or moved around the room as needed. Connie's handy-man hubby built the L-shaped workstation. There's room for the tv, sewing machine (not pictured, was in for a tune-up at the time), serger, and assorted sewing baskets.These vintage aluminum glasses are perfect for storing paintbrushes, colored pencils, and sculpting tools. The 30-year old baby dresser was painted some fun colors and is practical as well as sentimental. It holds thread cones, stablizers, silk painting supplies, glue guns, etc. A laminate floor is perfect for this kind of room. Easy to maintain and no worries about pins hiding in the carpet. The workstation has a polka-dot curtain velcroed to the edge (easy removal for changing things up!) It hides the computer, sewing machine tote, and shelves for storage baskets.
A wicker basket holds favorite magazines.The closet is outfitted with wire shelving and this is where you'll find the fabric stash. It's organized & easy to see what you've got when inspiration hits. The shelves are adjustable, so convenient for re-arranging as needed, should the stash just suddenly multiply!
A white wicker corner etergere doesn't take up a lot of room and is great for displaying dolls, silks, and other mementos.

The holidays are behind us and frosty days are here. Time to snuggle in a nice, warm sewing room and create! Here's what our Dolling Dames have been up to: Carlyn re-purposed a doll from some pieces Daria gave her and turned it into one of her clever marionnettes!

Jack's Hoffman entry returned home. A good reminder that this year's challenge fabric is now available and it's time to start on your 2011 entry!Joyce made the January drawing prize - a sweet smelling lady in pink roses & lace.She was won by Shauna, who also brought a "pretty in pink" creation. (I don't remember who made this next lacy beauty, but will correct this entry when I find out)

December Fun

In December, the Dames & Gent celebrate the season with short, very short, meeting, a luncheon & gift exchange, and a fun doll challenge. There was lots of food, lively conversation, surprise gifts, and of course, wonderful dolls to see.

Before we view The Challenge dolls, check out Laurie's holiday version of The Raven. She's just a vision of sugarplums & peppermints, isn't she?

The Challenge was decided in late spring and the pattern is called "The Gentleman." Such wonderful interpretations of this pattern!

There are still a few works in progress.
We enjoyed seeing some other things our friends have been making. Here's a new version of the Angela Jarecki fairy from our spring workshop.

Many Thanks to Doreen for opening her home to TDD. Her graciousness was rewarded by the Doll Fairies, as she won the door prize. In December, it's always one of Jean's beautiful dolls. As you know, our monthly meeting includes a short presentation by one of the members on some technique they use in doll making. Everyone always has something great to share & we really enjoy this part of the meeting.Pam shared this month, but first, let's enjoy some of her beautiful dolls.This was a Hoffman Challenge entry. The brown & green checks are actually hand-woven ribbon. There are many details on this doll.

These two are from Pam's flower fairy collection. One is dressed in her autumn finery and the other is ready for Christmas!Definately not a flower fairy, but just as colorful!Now, what do you suppose these little ones are whispering about? Think about it - what do all women love? SHOES!Pam shared her secret for making shoes from silk poinsietta petals or wide ribbon. It was a wonderful program. Thank you, Pam!

Welcome back to our November Show & Tell. In a previous post, I mentioned that Cindee Moyer's doll faces have a "signature look." I think our TDD dollmakers have their own unique, signature style, too! Shauna's signature is her clay sculptures. And check this out ~ her studio was shown in an article in this magazine. Congratulations, Shauna!Pat's sunny creatures make me think of summer on this cold November day!Guess what? They're made of paper bags! How cool is that?Vicky's dolls always look so sweet.

November Club Meeting

Welcome back! It's time to get pictures up from our November meeting before December arrives. (Computer upgrades & the dailyness of life can really interfere with fun sometimes!) Naturally one of the features of November's Show & Tell were the finished Raven dolls.
They all turned out so beautifully.
It's fun to see the different interpretations of the same design. (hint: you'll be seeing this concept again in the December blog when we show the results of "The Gentleman" Challenge) There were many other non-Raven delights at Show & Tell, plus pictures of the program. Check back!

"The Raven" Workshop

It's good to be back online! We can finally show you some pictures from our October workshop with artist Cindee Moyer. She was a delightful teacher and everyone really enjoyed the 2-day workshop. We made her design, called "The Raven." Here is the flock. In these pictures, they were pretty much finished. Just a few details were left to be completed at home. The sign was made by the daughter of one of our club members, who was a great little assistant! The rest of us were wishing we had one :)

The doll was a fairly easy pattern. She sits atop a straw nest (no legs to sew & stuff) surrounded by black feathers, her tulle skirts fluffing out around her.

Cindee's dolls all have lovely, delicate features.Raven's head is wrapped in black trim topped with angelina fibers & a black "hackle plate" (a feathery embellishment shaped in a half circle, can be found at craft stores) & she has shoulder epaulets of feathers left over from the nest.She's holding a glittery mask & a copy of Poe's "The Raven" (what else?)

It's so fun to see many different renderings of the same pattern!

Baby dolls, Barbies, & Raggedy Anns are all wonderful and important pieces in the world of dolls. But art dolls have a special place in our hearts. Our TDD members have brought the art of the doll to the heart of the art hangouts. In addition to a delightful display at the public library recently, some of our members took their dolls to Main Street. Literally! "Art on Main" was held in Jenks, OK on a pretty fall day and our art dolls were there in all their glory.

And so were our Dames!

Another beauty that saw the inside of an art gallery is this enticing mermaid by Joyce S. She was displayed & sold at Pearl Gallery (3rd & Peoria, Tulsa). Titled "Current Dreams" Joyce made her from muslin and then painted with acrylics. Her hair is string, styled with fabric stiffener. Her tail is is made from three layers of sheer fabric, overpainted with glitter glue. The base was custom made by a supportive & understanding husband. (What would we do without them?) Beautiful doll, Joyce!

October Club Pictures

Our meetings are always so full of news, catching up, planning, fabric swaps, pattern browsing, and just all sorts of excited chatter, but there are 3 particular highlights that everyone looks forward to: Show & Tell, the Door Prize drawing, and the Program.Sherry brought a colorful confection to Show & Tell; it's not one she made but bought from Joyce. Sherry also won the much coveted door prize this month. She was so excited to win for the very first time. The DP was a long-legged cutie appropriately attired for the Fall Festivities.Pam made the door prize this month and we all knew it would be wonderful, as they are every month! Pam's Show & Tell had a great story to go with her. She is modeled after a high school friend and will be a gift to her at the next reunion. Pam said this gal has faithfully planned the reunions & stayed in touch with everyone all these years. Pam's husband, who clearly appreciates his wife's talent, suggested she make a doll as a way of thanking her. Her little cheerleader outfit was modeled from a yearbook picture. The socks are baby socks, cut to fit. And the shoes - well, you need to be at club next month because Pam is going to demonstrate her cobbler techniques! The football field 'grass' is the stuff used on model train sets. What a fabulous gift for a special friend!

This month's header is a picture of a doll Pam made & brought for Show & Tell last fall. The year has surely flown by! But the doll is so cute & appropriate to greet our October blog. All of the monthly header pictures are whimsied up with a little Photoshop magic, just for fun. October is Halloween month and many little boys will want to be Cap'n Jack Sparrow again this year. Although this is not a doll made by Sheri, she thought we would enjoy seeing it. A wonderful likeness of Johnny/Jack!This sweet li'l thing must be going trick or treating as a Ladybug. No plastic pumpkin for her! She'll be collecting candy in her perfectly accessorized ladybug bag.Look at those big green eyes! That bag will be full of chocolate in no time. Miss Ladybug was created by Barbara.Whoa, Annie, git-cher gun! Someone is stylin here! Is this a high fashion Annie Oakley? She is Laurie's work in progress. The body is based on a Dianne Little pattern, the one we did in our workshop last fall.She's beautiful & not even finished. Can't wait to see her all done!

September Meeting - This 'n That

TDD Meetings aren't always just a display & sharing of members' latest doll creations. Often, someone brings a very cool or unusual "find". For instance, Shari brought these old patterns for Popeye & Olive Oyl dolls. One time, Maryne brought the most exquisite, heavily beaded piece of fabric any of us have ever seen. It was her wedding dress!All of The Dames have other artistic talents and interests. For instance, Maryne is a wonderful painter & sketch artist. A recent wrist injury put doll-making on hold, but she could still sketch!And at every meeting, a member shares techniques and information in a short program. We are blessed to have author and Bead Ranch owner, Sherril, as an active member of our group. She once did a program on making this doll-size beaded purse. This month, Jack "The Toolman" taught a little bit on making armatures.

In this post you'll see what Shirley's been working on. She made this little doll from an Izannah Walker online class with Dixie Redmond. The face, arms & legs are creative paper clay.

After taking Jayne's class on face drawing, she got busy making these cute little pouch-ettes. This Frosty Queen must have been inspired by our hot summer!She's made from an Annie Belcher pattern, reduced 65%. This pattern can be found in Soft Dolls & Animals magazine. She's the epitome of cool elegance.Wonderful dolls, Shirley!

The summer heat is behind us and we had a wonderful turnout for our September meeting. We discussed our upcoming Cindee Moyer workshop, pillaged a pile of fabric that Doreen brought (courtesy of her friend), had a program, and of course, our favorite part - Show & Tell! Joyce brought several wonderful dolls...

Shari, Rena & I went to Jayne's class on Sat. at the Cotton Patch.....It was a fun and informative class and there were 6 total in the class....Jayne is an excellent teacher and she was kept very busy with 6 students.....Here is an example of my unfinished work....taking a picture and looking at it helps to show where it needs work...like in the shading...... I picked up some great tips from Jayne.....

August Meeting

Whew, it's been HOT here in T-town! We had a bit of a small turnout for club this month due to vacations and the heat alert. Even these little critters were staying indoors!!They live inside this gourd and Doreen's elf is keeping a very watchful eye on them.He is just adorable.Doreen's pixies came out in the heat and stopped by the meeting on their way to the library. No, they're not checking out books. TDD has a display of dolls at the Hardesty Library this month.
Shirley has been busy while recuperating from knee surgery. Look at this lovely lady...The pattern is from Barbara Schoenoff's "Pas de Deux."Her gown is 're-purposed' from a table runner Shirley got at an estate sale.Her crown is made from an elegant piece of gold lace trim. As the saying goes, it's good to be Queen! If you're in the Tulsa area, be sure to stop by the Hardesty Library and see some of our collection in person.

Every month, one of our talented club members presents a short program on some aspect of doll-making. We've had beading, working with moulds, making tissue wings, using tools and more. Everyone has something to share and that's the beauty of TDD - so many creative people and so generous with their knowledge and materials.In June, Carlyn presented a great little program on hat-making. And wasn't it just clever of her to wear something special for the presentation? She brought several different styles for us to see. And instructions and some materials to take home. A special bonus was seeing so many of her wonderful dolls.All modeling her cute hats, of course! Thank you, Carlyn!

We were excited to see another completed workshop fairy. This is from Shari.This doll was really fun for everyone to make; she certainly challenged us and we're thrilled every time one comes to a meeting! Just gotta love those striped stockings!!Shirley's sweet fairy also paid us a visit. Shirley tried something different for the hair. Angela Jarecki encouraged us to not copy but make the pattern our own expression. Such pretty shoes to match her skirt. Speaking of Shirley...

She also won the door prize this month!Thank you, Susi, for contributing this adorable little doll.

After that delightful pause at the quilt show, we now return to our June meeting Show & Tell. Let's open with our Grande Dame's (Jean) completed workshop fairy! Jean's dolls always have exquisite detailing. Again, it's wonderful to see so much creativity, so many variations from one pattern. Jean chose to make her wings from organza. They go so perfectly with the rest of the costuming.
And what little game is afoot here? Or are these a wood elf's version of fuzzy slippers?
The "slippers" are being worn by a beautiful lady made by beautiful Jayne.Jayne also brought back a doll from a CIFI workshop. Kind of a mixed media creation of artists paper, fiber, fabric & paint.Is this not a gorgeous mixture of artistic medium? Showin' Off at the Quilt Show

Presiding over this wonderful display of art dolls from all over the nation was a very stately gentleman doll...aptly named "The Gentleman." This gorgeously costumed doll was made by our esteemed Jean as a raffle prize. This is also the pattern the club is using for our December challenge.And now on to the Dolls!The trunk was full of wondrous beaded & bangled creatures of all shapes and sizes.Each one incorporated the same fabric chosen by the Hoffman company. It's amazing to see how many different ways people can use the same fabric pattern and color and yet each doll is unique.Two of our club members' dolls were also chosen to 'travel' and came in the B trunk. This is Shari's. And this is Daria's. We also had many of our own dolls on display to introduce the public to the art of doll making, whether it be soft-sculpt cloth, cloth over clay, or even specialty paper. These are some Hoffman entries & winners from last year's challenge made by our own club members.Here are some Dolling Dames Dolls that were on display.Barbara's bride entered the CIFI "crazy desserts challenge" with Miss Strawberry Trifle and also came home with a blue ribbon in her category. Why the shotgun? Because "She'll do Anything for a Piece of Wedding Cake!" Congratulations Barbara!Also on display were some dolls made by well known artists and purchased by our members. For example, the little Girl Scout in the picture below.And this adorable "Strawberry Moose."More dolls made by our club members. Isn't this a smoldering couple? They are Sherril's Pas de Deaux dolls from last year's workshop with Barbara Schoenoff.Definately ready to tango, wouldn't you say?Pictures don't do justice to this little fairy on the swing. The whole tree was a riot of colorful cloth strips and there's another fairy sitting higher in the branches. Daria's dashing Zorro from last year's club color challenge.Are you wondering who won the dapper Gentleman?

June Show & Tell Pix

Our June meeting was all about our favorite subject - art dolls, of course! - and a bonus this month: a program on making hats. More about that later. First we need to find out why little missy here is rockin' an attitude...Look at Miss Strawberry Trifle all with her hands on her hips. uh huh.Well, turns out she just got back from CIFI and had a yummy time competing in the dessert challange.Not only that ~Yes, ma'am, she did!Congratulations, Laurie!!It wasn't all competition in the whipped cream & chocolate. The ladies took some classes and brought their work back to show us. Love this elegant beauty made from paper in a class by (Sherry Goshen?)Jayne made one, too, and we'll see hers in the next post. Laurie also treated herself to a special souvenir: a Diane Little doll.Gorgeous work by Diane Little!More to come! May Show&Tell Grand Finale

Welcome to the Grand Finale of our May Show&Tell posts! We'll start out with a riot of color from Vicki's Jester, made from a Virginia Robertson pattern. You know the saying, "2 (or 3, maybe 4) heads are better than 1". Well, Vicki had some extra heads from making her Hoffman doll, so she just whipped up something sweet!La Streisand, yes? While there may be a similarity, this is actually Vicki's Snow Angel, from a Leta Benedict pattern.(I just couldn't resist giving her a heavenly atmosphere via a bit of Photoshop)The door prize drawing is something we all look forward to at our meeting. In January, we choose a month to bring a door prize and/or present a program. The prizes are highly coveted, even sight unseen, because we know it will be something wonderful! Brenda brought this little clown & Shari won!

Shirley presented a great program on making molds. Thank you, Shirley!Time to wrap up and we're going to sign off with something a little more traditional from our club president...A Teddy Bear! Jack found these 'stuff a bear' kits at a discount store. He passed on the joy of making-it-yourself by buying several and letting the little ones in his family have a make & take party. Encouraging creativity - what a great gift to children!

This cutie is made from a Colleen Babcock pattern.

I wonder if wearing a clock on my skirt would improve my habit of just-barely-arriving-on-time?

Another finished workshop fairy! Pam's work always elicits much ooooo-ing & aaaah-ing.Notice the burnt-edging on her coller? That was not in the pattern. There was some burnt edging but Pam added more. She said she discovered a previously unknown fondness for burning things. Hmmm, can doll-making lead to pyromania?

Oh my goodness, did the Dames ever ramp up the whimsy factor this month! You are going to love the dolls you'll see here over the next couple of posts. I assumed everyone would be too busy finishing their workshop fairies to make anything else this month, but now I wonder if these ladies ever sleep! What do you think this purple confection is saying? Whatever it is, she looks so joyful and carefree! Jayne created her at Magic, Mischief & Mayhem. (Barbara & Jayne went together; I wonder if the workshop was 'magic' and they brought the mischief & mayhem, hmmm?)

A completed workshop Fairy!!Carlyn not only finished this one, she has another one started! Way to rock, Carlyn!Barbara brought two dolls that were her own original patterns & clothing designs. We have such amazingly talented people in the club! This is called "It is Never Polite to Ask a Lady Her Age" She is a yellow "cake" with chocolate icing & is wearing a cake hat complete with birthday candle. Happy Birthday!Speaking of cake, this little lady is called "She Will Do Anything for a Piece of Wedding Cake." She has a bouquet in one hand & a rifle in the other. Just waiting for Mr. Right!You saw previews of Laurie's doll last month. We were so excited to see her and hear the rest of her story! We found out she's "Not a Doll to be Triffled With." Why? Because she is entering the CIFI challenge. The theme is desserts, so she's going as a strawberry chocolate trifle. Laurie used the Barbara Schoenoff Pas de Deux pattern to make her.Can you imagine a whole challenge based on dessert dolls?? Talk about eye candy!

Spring Workshop cont.

Just have a few pictures from Day 2 & 3. We got so busy really working on those dolls! And we found an interesting use for large sized ladies cotton underwear..

This is Angela's piece, ready to cover.Here she is demonstrating covering the head with fabric, then ironing out the wrinkles. We all agreed - wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just iron away our own wrinkles?Face is nice & smooth. Time for some makeup.Fairy wings! This was a fun technique to learn.These three days were jam-packed with information. None of us finished our dolls by the end of class. You'll have to come back after the May meeting to see some beautiful fairies. However, Angela asked us to bring some of our other work in for her to see. So over the next day or so, we'll be posting those.

Spring Workshop

We just finished the most MAH-va-lous spring workshop with Angela Jarecki! It was challenging, informative, intense, FUN...everything we could ask for.

Angela is a delightful teacher and her work is inspiring. Our objective was to learn how to make an armature based, fabric-over-paper-clay, fairy based on her doll, "Reluctance." Day One. Class begins promptly at 9:00 AM. (on time? - something we're not used to in these parts!) First step - compress a styrofoam egg. Piece o' cake.

Step two: cover with paper clay. OK, we can do this.

9:30 AM. hmmmm. Can we really do this?

9:45 AM. uh... maybe we're in over our heads. Just kidding. We began adding features. Angela guided & encouraged every step of the way.

It's an amazing process to push & prod lumps of clay and see it gradually become a fairy face!

While the face dried, it was time to begin building the armature. Check back tomorrow to see how that went!

Laundry Day

Carlyn made this charming tableau for a silent auction to raise money for a Girls Club in Uganda. The little girl is hanging her best dress and petticoats on the laundry line to dry. Oops! It must have been her only dress!

Connie finished her "Work in Progress" just in time for the April meeting. Connie tried her hand at combining patterns for the first time. It's a Patti Culea pattern using the torso from the Diane Little doll we did at the workshop (enlarged a little). Her little tank top is made from hand-dyed silk from a previous hobby-attempt.
Can she see the future in that glass ball?

What is this fuzzy mass of color, you ask?

Hair for pin dolls!

The club is making them to sell at the Green Country Quilt Show.

The faces are made from molds & glued to a decorated laminate sample. Holes are punched for wired, beaded arms & legs.

Add a riot of colorful fibers for a very stylish coif. Voila - can you say cute?!

Art Dolls - Picasso Style

Our April meeting was fun as always and full of ooohs & aaahs, as we got to see what everyone's been working on while waiting for spring! We'll be showing them over the next couple days.

This little elf made by Doreen has "Mischief" written all over his face! He brought a little friend, too.
Laurie accepted an unusual challenge - create this Picasso-inspired art doll from a bag of doll parts and materials.

She did a great job; this is a really cool doll! Picasso himself would surely be impressed.Check back - there's more to come!

Play Day at Jean's

Recently some of us 'rookies' got to spend a Saturday morning in Jean's Magic Sewing Room.Well, it's not exactly magic, but being surrounded with her fantastical dolls is like being in Wonderland!No fairy wands were waved. She worked with us on some basic techniques the old fashioned way: practicing drawing faces first on paper, then on a stuffed head, showed us how to make hair, answered questions & gave advice. What a blessing she is to the Club!We also got to see a near-finished version of The Gentleman that she's been working on. He has the sweetest face!Such pretty fabric makes up his little ensemble.The Gentleman is also a club challenge for anyone who wants to participate. We gave ourselves a long-range goal (our Christmas party) so we can enjoy working on him at a leisurely pace and have time for a couple workshops this year, personal projects, a club project or two.Shari has started working on hers and brought some fabric to show us.

It will be so fun to see what everyone comes up with by December!

March Show&Tell

Happy March, Everyone! Our monthly meeting was quite busy what with old business, new business, working on pin dolls, and all 'round enjoying being together. Throw a little birthday celebration for Jayne in the mix, then top it off with show & tell...well, as you can imagine, it was a fun meeting - as always! You would never guess by these pictures that Vicki is somewhat new to doll making!

This is Doreen's firey red-head. A perfect show&tell as we head into St. Patrick's Day! Matching parasol for our Irish lass. Shari finished her Pas de Deux! Doesn't her pose make you want to say, "Ta DA!" Her beautiful hair is made from a fancy looped ribbon trim.
This is Laura's doll, made from the Diane Little clown pattern. The yellow is soooo cheery, especially with all the overcast days we've had. So much sunshine in such a little doll!

Shirley brought her wonderful Izannah Walker doll, one finished and one a work in progress. With all the partying and sharing, I didn't get a good picture of them. Please click here to see them on Shirley's blog.

And last but not least, the Door Prize, made this month by Maryne and won by (lucky) Jack. We think Maryne designed this pattern (?) I so regret not getting a good picture of this doll as she is absolutely delightful!

At every meeting, we have a short program, a demonstration of some technique used in doll making. Our members are so talented and so generous in sharing.This month, Barbara showed us what she learned from a Jean Bernard workshop. How to make wings from tissue, wire, Grrip glue, & glitter.

You can view Jean's tutorial online here. On that one she uses cellophane, but the rest of the technique is the same.

Aren't these angelic heralds simply lovely? Barbara made them from an Arley Berryhill pattern (I think). The fun thing about art dolls is the different ephemera used to create them. The herald's trumpets are... ...golf tees!
Note the bead trimmings on the hem of her dress & some on her headpiece.

This is Pam's Pretty in Pink ballerina, a gift for her niece's birthday.
What little girl wouldn't simply adore this doll?!I missed the story about this next doll, made by Shirley.(if she can fill us in, that would be great! Mercy me, I got so busy taking pictures, I missed the story about this cute little clown, too! Someone please jump in here and tell about these dolls!

February Show&Tell

Our February meeting was quite productive and VERY lively!! We made plans for our spring workshop, discussed the fall workshop and making pins to sell at the quilt show, set up a fun Challenge for next December, enjoyed a demonstration by Barbara, and, our favorite part - a wonderful Show & Tell.

Here is Shari's Hoffman Doll, returned from her travels safe & sound. Shari also finished her Dianne Little doll. She wasn't able to attend the Christmas luncheon, so this is the first time we've met her!

Laurie, our esteemed club Treasurer and local librarian, hasn't been clowning around; she's been busy making doll art!

Do you ever wonder what Santa looks like the rest of the year? He's just as stylin' as he is in December. This is Jayne's creation.

She also brought this elegant senorita.

January PlayDay @ Shirley's House

We had fun at playday at my house in January after the snow and ice. Jean, Jayne, Joyce, Sherry, Laura, Barbara came and we worked a bit and talked a lot. I'm sorry, I was so busy I forgot to take one picture!!! Getting too use to having Connie take pictue. Daria and on are taking Dixie Redmond's online class, Izannah Walker doll with creative paperclay sculpted head.....very challenging.
